Statement from MPP Michael Harris
Re. Human Rights Tribunal Decision
J.F. v. Waterloo Catholic District School Board
It’s as disappointing as it is frustrating that those requiring service dogs are continuing to face further hurdles to be allowed the public accommodations they deserve.
The Disability Act calls for accommodations for people with service animals and the Ontario Human Rights Code speaks to the ‘duty to accommodate persons with disabilities.’
We support service dogs for the blind, PTSD sufferers and others.
Families of children with autism shouldn’t have to face further hardships to get the same accommodations for their children.
I remain hopeful that legislative steps like the Ontario Service Dogs Act will help to address further roadblocks preventing accommodations to those children, veterans, or others who require the support of a service dog
