Queen’s Park – Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris urged action on Ontario’s opioid crisis during a media conference today focusing on his private member’s bill that would make it an offence for unauthorized persons to possess pill presses.

“These pills can look exactly like an Oxycontin or Xanax pill, but in reality are laced with a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl and produced by the thousands by a drug dealer out of a pill press,” said Harris. “To be blunt, there is absolutely no reason for anyone to have one of these in their basement….and every day that we leave them out there without consequences, people are dying.”

The Illegal Pill Press Act would regulate the ownership of pill presses and other similar pharmaceutical equipment so that they could only be possessed by pharmacists, pharmacies, and other individuals authorized under the legislation. Owning a pill press without authorization would result in major fines and jail-time, up to 2 years imprisonment on the 3rd offence.

“Look, you can go online right now and buy one of these death machines for up to $10,000, get it shipped for free to Canada from China – it’s like an easy bake oven for drug dealers, and right now there’s little we can do about it,” Harris pointed out. “We need to keep these machines off the street and out of the hands of people who would use them to recklessly endanger our communities by drug production.

“That’s why my private member’s bill, the Illegal Pill Press Act, will make it an offence for unauthorized persons to possess a pill press – if you’re not authorized, if you’re not a pharmacy/pharmacist, you are going to face jail time and fines for possessing one of these machines.”

Harris indicated that in the coming months he looks to build support for his private members bill in hopes the government will help ensure we stop the illegal pill presses before they claim more lives in Ontario.
