One year and several tragic truck accidents later…

Transportation Minister still spinning wheels on inadequate truck testing

QUEEN’S PARK – News of would-be truckers heading out of the GTA to “easy pass” testing facilities for their licenses has heightened concerns over the Transportation Minister’s lack of action on truck testing one year after he promised to address the issue.

“Given the tragic toll that accidents involving trucks have taken on our roads recently, the Minister has to understand it’s his responsibility to ensure truckers are tested to standards that meet Ontario highway traffic demands,” Ontario PC Transportation Critic Michael Harris said. “Over a year ago the Minister promised us he would do something about unprepared truckers being licensed to drive our roads – and one year later we are still waiting.”

Harris noted that today’s Toronto Star investigation revealing that some GTA truckers are heading well out of the GTA to testing facilities with higher passing rates followed last year’s revelations that testing wasn’t even being done to standards for highway driving.

“Last year the Star revealed that provincial truck testing facilities weren’t even taking potential truckers onto the 400 series of highways as they were mandated to do – a year later they report that not only are truckers not learning on the 400 series, they’re earning licenses on traffic-light rural roads,” asserted Harris. “Following a number of tragic accidents involving trucks on GTA highways, we wonder what it’s going to take for the Minister to finally begin to take this issue seriously.”

In response to the growing concerns voiced by Harris, the Minister repeated year-old promises to introduce mandatory entry-level truck training that even if kept, would do nothing to address the concerns over inadequate truck testing.
