MPPs Fife, Harris call for transit fairness for Kitchener-WaterlooMay 29, 2015
Kitchener –Kitchener-Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife and Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael joined to deliver a united message calling for transit fairness for Kitchener Waterloo today.
At a news conference under the “Region of Waterloo’s Transit Hub” sign at Victoria and Waterloo Streets, the MPP’s from Ontario’s two opposition parties decried the Liberal government’s continued carrot-on the stick approach to promising, yet never quite delivering on transit commitments to Waterloo Region.
“While the promises have been many – from two thirds funding for LRT to all-day two-way GO – the truth has become more obvious with each subsequent transit announcement elsewhere in the province…clearly when it comes to funding Kitchener-Waterloo’s transit pledge, the cupboard is bare,” Harris stated.
A recent series of announcements have seen other jurisdictions in Ontario receive funding for all-day, two way GO service, and full funding for LRT while residents in Waterloo Region continue to receive the short-end of the stick.
“We are asking for promises made to be promises kept,” said Fife. “Before the last election, the Liberals promised two-way, all-day GO train service to Kitchener in five years. Last month, they announced we would get ‘peak hour, peak direction’ service instead but not for a decade. This government needs to be held to account for their promises.”
