New Hamburg Independent – Bill designed to protect region from high construction costs gets voted down at Queen’s Park

KITCHENER — A bill that would have protected the Region of Waterloo’s construction costs from being inflated by a union monopoly was voted down Sept. 19 in the Ontario legislature. Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris tabled Bill 73, named the Fair and Open Tendering Act, after a few regional employees joined the Carpenter’s Union. Their arrival will likely force the municipal government to use only construction companies that employee that union’s workers for all regional projects. Read More
