New documents uncover further scandal at eHealth

March 25, 2013

QUEEN’S PARK – The all-expenses paid PhD for eHealth Ontario’s Chief Operating Officer – including tuition, textbooks, student fees and regular flights between Toronto and Ottawa – is the latest abuse of taxpayers dollars at the scandal-plagued Ministry of Health, PC MPP Michael Harris said today.

“From Ornge to eHealth, Health Minister Deb Matthews – Premier Wynne’s right hand woman – has overseen two of the province’s largest scandals,” Harris said. “Ontario taxpayers are already on the hook for $2 billion wasted at eHealth with little to nothing to show for it, and now are forced to foot the bill for a senior staff member’s tuition and flights to Ottawa.”

Harris noted that this isn’t the first time that an agency of the provincial government has wasted taxpayers dollars to pay for an executive’s university degree. In 2011, it came to light that Ornge was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund their executives MBAs. “It is becoming increasingly clear: Deb Matthews and the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals cannot properly manage taxpayers’ money.”

News of the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals’ latest scandal comes on the heels of Matthews’ promotion to Deputy Premier, Harris said, adding that this appointment demonstrates Premier Wynne’s insistence to stay the usual course of throwing taxpayer money at problems instead of actually fixing the issue.

“Once again, Premier Wynne and the Liberal government have proven that they cannot manage complex files, such as Ontario’s health care system,” Harris concluded.
