MPP Michael Harris congratulates BlackBerry on BB10 launchJanuary 30, 2013
KITCHENER – The release of BlackBerry’s new BB10 smartphone and operating system demonstrates the vibrancy of Waterloo Region’s tech sector, which continues to create good, high-paying jobs by driving innovation forward in Canada and the world, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris said today.
“I would like to congratulate BlackBerry on the successful launch of its new product line,” Harris said. “As a key company in mobile communications, Blackberry continues to lead the sector in new directions while playing a pivotal role in our local economy, which is home to hundreds of technology companies.”
After more than 18 months of development, the BB10 was unveiled today simultaneously in London, New York, Toronto, Paris, Johannesburg and Dubai.
Tonight, BlackBerry will put on a celebration in downtown Kitchener, thanking the city and the Region for their tremendous support over the past decade.
“Ever since its days as a humble startup in Waterloo, BlackBerry has been a driving force in our community – creating thousands of highly skilled jobs for residents by assembling, testing and producing their products right here in the Region,” Harris said. “I’m glad to see this iconic company has taken a major step forward by introducing a sophisticated new operating system and smartphone on the market.”
Along with innovation, BlackBerry has partnered with the universities and colleges in the area to provide research dollars and expertise, including co-op programs at the University of Waterloo and job placements for graduates around the Region.
